Platform bird feeders are about the only feeders that Mourning Doves are comfortable on. These large, open feeders are perfect for Mourning Doves. They will occasionally eat at smaller feeders but never stay long.

What is the best food to feed doves?

Doves enjoy a range of foods, including pellets, seeds, vegetables, fruit and the occasional treat.

  • Doves should be offered 15-25% pelleted-based diet and 50-60% bird seed.
  • Feed your dove dark, leafy greens and vegetables every other day.
  • Once a week, feed your dove fruit such as berries, melon and kiwi.

Can mourning doves be hand fed?

Sometimes a baby mourning dove may fall from the nest or be abandoned by its parents. If you find a baby dove that is unable to fly, you can hand-feed it until it is able to survive on its own.

Do mourning doves eat sunflower seeds whole?

While mourning doves will avoid black-striped sunflower seeds, they will eat black oil sunflower seeds. Because their beaks are not meant to crack open shells, they will be especially attracted to shelled sunflower seeds. Otherwise, they will swallow the seed in the shell whole.
